Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) is a mental health condition recognized by many psychologists and health professionals, especially in the context of excessive or compulsive use of online games that results in significant impairment in daily life.
What Is Internet Gaming Disorder?
Internet Gaming Disorder is characterized by persistent and recurrent participation in online or offline video games, often leading to:
- Loss of control over gaming habits
- Prioritizing gaming over other interests or activities
- Continued gaming despite negative consequences
While it is not officially listed in the DSM-5 as a formal disorder, it is included in the section recommending further research. However, the World Health Organization (WHO) has included a similar condition called “Gaming Disorder” in the ICD-11 (International Classification of Diseases).
Some common symptoms:
- Preoccupation with gaming
- Withdrawal symptoms when gaming is taken away
- Tolerance – need to spend more time gaming
- Unsuccessful attempts to control participation in gaming
- Loss of interest in previous hobbies and entertainment
- Continued use despite knowledge of problems
- Deceiving family members or others about gaming
- Using gaming to escape or relieve negative moods
- Jeopardizing or losing relationships, jobs, or educational opportunities due to gaming
Warning Signs of Internet Gaming Disorder:
- Decline in academic or job performance
- Social withdrawal or isolation
- Sleep disturbances due to gaming late into the night
- Irritability or restlessness when not playing
- Neglect of hygiene or physical health
